What we collect, and why.

Last updated: April 2026. We're a small hand-curated guide — this is the whole story, in plain English.

What we collect

When you fill in one of the forms on this site (the "tell us about your place" form or the trip-planning form), we collect what you type into it: your name, your business name, the region you're in, your email if you give us one, and any note you send.

Our server logs IP addresses for a short period for security and rate-limiting (so bots can't hammer the form). That's it. No analytics, no advertising pixels, no third-party trackers, no cookies that aren't strictly necessary for the site to work.

Why we collect it

Only to reply to you. If you ask to be listed, we email you back. If you plan a trip, we email the itinerary to the address you give us. We don't add you to a mailing list. We don't sell or share your details. We don't follow up unless we're following up about the thing you asked us about.

Where it's stored

Form submissions are stored in our database, hosted in the EU (Ireland). Confirmation and notification emails are sent through an EU-based email provider. Both are GDPR-compliant.

How long we keep it

We keep submissions for as long as your listing or enquiry is active. If you ask us to delete your details, we will, within a reasonable timeframe.

Your rights

Under UK and EU GDPR you have the right to ask what we hold about you, to correct it, to take it elsewhere, or to have it deleted. Email hello@theatlanticcompanion.com and a real person will reply.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Irish Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie) or, if you're in the UK, the ICO (ico.org.uk).

Cookies

We don't use tracking cookies. The site uses a small number of strictly-necessary cookies for things like remembering you've dismissed a banner — nothing that needs your consent under the ePrivacy Directive. If we ever add analytics, you'll see a banner asking before anything is set.

Changes

If we change this page in any meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top. The current version is the one that applies.
