Welcome to Cliffs of Moher & Doolin.
We're glad you're here.

The Cliffs of Moher — Aillte an Mhothair — rise 214m at their highest point and run 14km along the west Clare coast. They draw well over a million visitors a year and are among Ireland's most-visited natural attractions. Five miles north, Doolin — Dúlainn — is the village credited with reviving Irish traditional music in the 1960s through the playing of the Russell brothers. Three pubs, sessions every night, ferries to the Aran Islands. The two together make one of the most concentrated WAW stops on the spine.

The cliffs everyone comes for. Doolin for the music after.

The essentials

What you shouldn't miss.

Locally chosen, not algorithmic. In rough order of "if you only do one thing".

View

Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience

The main viewing platform with O'Brien's Tower (built 1835 by local landlord Cornelius O'Brien as a Victorian viewing point). On a clear day: the Aran Islands offshore, the Twelve Bens of Connemara north, Loop Head south. The visitor centre is built into the hillside to keep the cliffs uncluttered.

Good to know · Pre-book online for the cheapest entry; pre-booked is significantly less than walk-up. Open daily; closes early in winter. Allow 90 minutes.

Nature

Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk

A 20km cliff path runs from Hag's Head in the south to Doolin in the north, taking in the full length of the cliffs. Free, no entry charge — you only pay if you enter the visitor centre. The Doolin–Cliffs section is the popular shorter walk, around 90 minutes one way.

Good to know · Park at Doolin or Hag's Head. No fences in places — stay back from the edge. Wind can be dangerous on exposed sections.

Town

Doolin village

Three settlements that became one — Fisherstreet (lower), Roadford (middle) and Doolin proper. McGann's, McDermott's and Gus O'Connor's are the three music pubs, sessions every night in season. The Russell brothers — Micho, Pakie, Gussie — made this village a global pilgrimage spot for Irish music.

Good to know · Pay-and-display by the pier. Sessions usually start around 9.30pm.

Nature

Doolin Cave (Pol an Ionain)

Home to the Great Stalactite — at 7.3m, one of the longest free-hanging stalactites in the world. Discovered by two cavers in 1952. A 30-metre descent into the cave by walkway, then a guided tour.

Good to know · Signposted from Doolin. Pre-book online; limited tour sizes. Allow 90 minutes.

Island

Aran Islands Ferry from Doolin

Doolin Pier is the closest mainland point to Inis Oírr, the smallest of the Aran Islands — 25 minutes by ferry. From Inis Oírr you can see the Plassey shipwreck (the boat from the Father Ted opening titles) and walk to the lighthouse. Inishmaan and Inishmore also reachable from here in season.

Good to know · Doolin Ferry Co. and Doolin2Aran Ferries from Doolin Pier. April–October. Combined cliffs-cruise tickets available.

History

O'Brien's Tower

A round stone tower built in 1835 by Cornelius O'Brien — local landlord, MP, eccentric — as a tea-room and viewing point for Victorian visitors. The cliff scenery he built it for hasn't moved. Climb the tower for a few extra metres of altitude and a 360-degree view.

Good to know · Inside the visitor experience site. Small extra fee on top of admission.

Common questions

What people ask about Cliffs of Moher & Doolin.

How long does it take to visit the Cliffs of Moher?

Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours at the cliffs themselves — enough to walk to O'Brien's Tower, both viewing platforms, and back. Add an hour if you're doing the longer Coastal Walk south toward Hag's Head, and at least another hour for the visitor centre exhibitions.

Is Doolin or Liscannor a better base for the Cliffs of Moher?

Doolin is the better base for most travellers: it's the closer village (about 8 km north of the cliffs), the trailhead for the free Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk, and the ferry port for the Aran Islands. It also has the strongest traditional music scene in County Clare. Liscannor is quieter and closer to Lahinch's surfing beach.

Can you walk to the Cliffs of Moher from Doolin?

Yes — the Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk runs about 8 km from Doolin pier south to Hag's Head, passing right along the cliff edge and the official visitor area. Allow 3 hours one way; most people do it as a one-way walk and arrange a lift, taxi or shuttle back.

Do you need to book the Cliffs of Moher in advance?

In peak season (June–August) and on weekends, yes — the visitor centre uses timed entry and online tickets are cheaper than at the gate. Outside peak you can usually arrive and pay. Check the official Cliffs of Moher website for current pricing and slots before you go.

Are the Cliffs of Moher worth visiting on a rainy day?

Mist and low cloud often hide the cliffs entirely, which is genuinely disappointing if it's your only stop. On a wet day the Doolin Cave (Pol an Ionain) and a session in one of Doolin's pubs are better uses of the morning; come back to the cliffs when the cloud lifts.
